Raw apple sauce, onion scrambled eggs, and buttered toast. Very very good.
The raw apple sauce is very easy. I sliced two apples into quarters, halved the quarters, then threw whatever could fit into my Magic Bullet chopper. (A toy Lee bought me that I truly love). I pureed the apples, but only until they were chunky. I added a teaspoon of brown sugar and the rest of the apples and blended then again. You can see the result. All three of the kids loved it.
The Magic Bullet makes easy scrambled eggs for a small family like mine, too. Just crack however many eggs into it, add a few slices of onions, a splash of milk, and blend. Very fluffy and easy to cook. I added some herbs and spices, too.
What’s really cool is that most of this food came from our Angel Food box. Angel Food is a kind of ministry that is available all over the country. You don’t have to be poor to order from them. They have boxes of food that you can order, and the prices are at an substantial discount. Since everyone who buys is buying the same box, they are bought in bulk and the savings are passed on to the family instead of a store. We bought a main box and a produce box. The main box, I wasn’t as impressed with the discounts - since I use a lot of coupons, sales, and store brands, I don’t think it was a savings of 50% - maybe more like 35-40% in our area. on the other hand, if you lived in an area with a higher cost of living, it might be an even better savings. It was still about as cheap as my usual techniques, though, and it helps me keep the pantry stocked.
The real savings for me was in the produce box. It’s hard to get good deals on produce. For $18, I got 3 lbs of potatoes, 3 lbs of sweet potatoes, 3 lbs of onions, a head of cabbage, a bag of carrots, a box of raisins, a pineapple, 3 lbs of apples, 2 pears, and a 3lb bag of oranges. That is an excellent deal. It’s so good to have fresh food in the house. I am really using all of it.
Incidentally, if you live in the Mechanicsburg, area, Weiser’s Market has a phenomenal deal on potatoes this week - through next Thursday they are on sale for $1.48 / five pound bag! That is a great price and potatoes keep awhile so it would be a good time to stock up. It’s also nice to support a local business like theirs. Also, Weis’s (note the difference there) has an excellent sale running this week with a $1.69 deal on ground beef and boneless chicken breast.
