Learning

Lee got this DVD at Walmart for something like $6. He got it for himself. He sat down and watched the first disc one afternoon while I went grocery shopping with the two littler ones. Elijah watched it with him - just because he was in the room. (We're almost always all in the same room, my family was the same way growing up) He was captivated. He spent the next three days telling me I had to watch it, and telling me all the ways that the Earth could be destroyed by the sun and asteroids and such. It was sweet. :)

Then when Lee was at Borders the other day (making use of a "40% off a single item" coupon to buy himself a cookbook), he picked up a bargain book of space photography for Elijah - gorgeous huge pictures of the moon and planets and nebulae. There are short captions - three or four sentences on each page. It is not a child's book. Elijah is reading all the way through it - he even asked if he could keep it in the bathroom like Mommy and Daddy do. That made me laugh.

It's not a big deal - it's just one of those learning moments that homeschoolers are looking for. Real, passionate, spontaneous learning. For me, it's why I keep my kids home. For the Chief, it's like having a new best friend to learn with. Who just happens to be your kid.
