Elijah likes to come into the bedroom when I'm nursing Gabe. He knows I kick everybody out so Gabe can fall asleep, so he sees this as his opportunity for one-on-one time. He usually announces himself with, "Can we talk?" This week's topics have included:
How much he loves the Mario blanket his dad picked for him for Christmas. This was repeated a lot.
His top Christmas presents: Ben 10 Omnitrix, Mario Brothers Fleece Blanket, Darth Vader Alarm Clock. We talked about how nice it was that Dad picked those particular presents our for him specially. I am trying to build a nice segue for the inevitable discovery that all presents are picked by somebody who loves him specially, not a jolly man in a red coat. I have a feeling this will be the year. And I have a feeling Olivia will be right behind him, because her brain just works differently than his.
Our family, and what a "special" baby Gabe is. Elijah likes to talk about what a good baby Gabe is, how smart he is to be crawling and talking so early, and much we all love the baby. How our family is the best family in the world.
How much he likes his bed, and how he never wants to trade back with Olivia. This is a Big Deal. The kids found some spiders in the ceiling corner last year, and for awhile neither one would sleep up top. Both of them slept on the bottom bunk. Now Elijah has his nest up there, with his lego tote, his solar system model (another Christmas present), and his clothing tote. Now Julius sleeps on the bottom bunk with Olivia, on the full sized mattress underneath, about half the time (the other half he is still next to me). Elijah is happy with this arrangement. He likes his private space.
These are just this week's serious topics. Elijah has also liked to talk to me about God, space, tornadoes, heaven, his siblings, and various movies and games. He also likes to tease and scare me, using the same deadpan humor as his father.
Given that his father and I regularly discuss free will vs. predestination, Church history, physics, comic books, world history, American history, value systems, ecology, music, oh, I'd better just stop and say EVERYTHING, it should be no surprise to me that this firstborn son of ours like to sit down and have a good deep chat.
